3-Minute Devotions for Teen Guys

DAY 2 OF 7

I Thought I Could Trust You

Some secrets you hear should be passed on to an adult. For instance, if someone tells you he is thinking of hurting himself or someone else, you should seek help. Too often, someone asks us to keep a secret. We make a promise, but then go tell someone, reminding the next person it’s confidential. That person then does the same thing, and soon everyone knows. Secrets are meant to be private. Your friend may be trying to understand a struggle he or she is going through before deciding to trust you with the problem. However, when you let the details leak, it only convinces your friend that he or she made a mistake in trusting you. If you feel you absolutely must tell someone, make sure it’s a trusted adult who can help. Passing information on to other people your own age only ruins friendships, increases frustration, and invites unwanted trouble. Social media lets people post details about every part of their lives. If someone shares private details with you, it’s never meant for the news feed.

Prayer: Dear God, help me be a good friend. If someone needs help, I should get help. If someone just wants to talk through issues, I should keep my mouth shut. I can always talk to You about any problem. May I use my mouth to ask for Your help in every situation. Amen.
