The Lord's Prayer (The Model Prayer)

DAY 3 OF 9

Of all the parts of the Lord’s Prayer, I think this is the easiest part to overlook. Three simple words: “Your kingdom come.” Nevertheless, there is a lot included in those three words.

I believe this phrase can be taken two ways. Perhaps it is a prayer of expectation for the Lord’s ultimate return to earth, much like John’s prayer at the end of Revelation when he says, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.”

But I believe it is also a reference to the desire for the Lord to reign over us on this earth. The word “kingdom” means that God has complete rule and reign. This is a prayer of submission, asking the Lord to take sovereign control over our lives each day. When Jesus is on the throne of our hearts, our desires are replaced with His desires, and our plans are replaced with His plans. “The old things have passed away, and look new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

John Wesley summarized this passage of Scripture in this way: “May Your kingdom come quickly and swallow up all the kingdoms of the earth. May all people receive You, O Christ, for their King and truly believe in Your name. May they be filled with righteousness, peace, joy, holiness, and happiness till they are removed into Your kingdom of glory to reign with You forever.” May we seek the Lord’s kingdom to come in our own lives. May we pray that Jesus would be on the throne of our hearts, and may we live out that prayer daily.
