The Lord's Prayer (The Model Prayer)

DAY 1 OF 9

Jesus begins His model prayer, often known as the Lord’s Prayer, by acknowledging the One to whom He is speaking. As He does so, He gives us a glimpse into the type of relationship we should have with the Father.

First of all, He prays to “our Father.” This implies a relationship. As Christians, we have full access to God, because He is our Father. John 1:12 says that to all who receive Christ, “He gave them the right to be children of God.” When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn. This symbolizes the new relationship that we can have with God. We no longer need to go through an earthly priest to approach the Father. We can come to Him any time, day or night, through Jesus Christ.

Not only does God allow us to approach Him in prayer, He desires it. Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6, “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” God is a loving Father who longs to hear the voice of His children, to speak to them, and to give them comfort and assurance.

As we pray today, let us “approach the throne of grace with boldness,” knowing that the One on the throne is the One we also call “our Father.”
