DAY 27 OF 46

Promises: Finding Rest

According to a recent article in Forbes, there are many reasons that you may feel tired all the time. Here is part of their list: Inadequate sleep, medical conditions, stress, depression and anxiety, and lack of physical activities.[1]They also listed caffeine, but I refuse to include it! I need caffeine 😀! Certainly, there are many things that can wear us down, but there is only one place where we can find true rest.

Psalm 62:1-2, 5-6
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

I will find true rest for my worn-out soul in only one place—God alone. The first part of today’s passage literally reads, “Only to God is my soul silent.” Only to God did David look with complete calmness. He knew that God was his “rock” (source of safety) and “salvation” (deliverance). David said God “is my fortress” and like a soldier sitting inside the impenetrable walls of a great stronghold, David rested in the Lord.

How about you? What’s wearing you down? Are distractions turning your attention from the only One who can bring calmness to your frenetic heart? I challenge you to an experiment. Start each day by reading God’s Word, spending time in prayer, and continuing to communicate with him throughout the day. Take a walk on a trail or spend time at a park enjoying God’s beautiful creation. God can deliver rest to your soul. Maybe you’ve been too busy to let him.

Father, I can get wound tight over small things. Help me to unplug and seek you. And help me find rest amid my responsibilities. Remind me often that true and complete rest is found only in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
