Mastering Time Management as a Solopreneur: Insights From Jesus

DAY 4 OF 4

The Importance of Focus

If there’s a task on my to-do list that I don’t particularly fancy, I have the tendency to postpone it.

Once I finally begin working on it, my phone suddenly becomes very tempting—social media is calling my name, and I might want to check one more time if I have new messages. Before I know it, I lose focus and unintentionally spend way more time than I wanted on something far less important.

Distractions come in many forms: notifications, incoming calls, binge-worthy TV series, etc.

Even though there wasn’t advanced technology in Jesus’ time, He also experienced distractions trying to demand His attention.

In Matthew 12, Jesus’ mother and brothers asked for His attention, but He didn’t give it to them. Jesus was in the midst of talking to the crowd and didn’t see any reason to stop.

In Mark 1, everyone is out and about looking for Jesus (He’d probably been away for quite some time). Once found, Jesus responded, “Let’s go to other places to share the news since that is why I came.”

Jesus knew what He needed to focus on; therefore, He didn’t bow to any peer pressure. He kept His eyes on His calling and was great at ignoring distractions.

As a solopreneur, you can guard yourself against distractions, too. For instance, you can do this by turning off all your phone notifications, staying away from social media when you’re on a break, scheduling deep work sessions, and removing your inbox from your phone.

And these are just practical habits that are not based on Scripture. Scheduling time to be with God (as we discussed in yesterday’s devotion) is key to handling distractions that pull you away from doing activities that are beneficial to God’s plan for your life. It helps us remain focused on what’s important.

What distraction is God asking you to deal with today? How will you ignore the distraction and create more focus?
