7 Impactful Reminders

DAY 2 OF 7

Don't Take it Personal...

Ever have a heated conversation with someone? It happens. The good news in this situation is that the only person you can control in the matter is yourself. Reflect on what you could have done or said to improve the negative exchange. Or how about this shift in thought: maybe the other person is having a bad day and decided to take it out on you. Or, after self-reflection: maybe it was you projecting you feelings on the other person. Perhaps it was just a simple misunderstanding. Whatever the reason, it is important to not take it personally and allow anger to guide how you approach the matter.

It's natural to get angry. We are humans full of emotions of which anger is one of them. However, becoming angry and staying angry are two very different things. Where anger remains, conflict is sure to manifest (Proverb 29:22).

It's been proven, time after time, that a simple conversation and/or openness to see from the other person's perspective helps lead to resolve, or at least to an understanding. Taking things personally all the time only adds to the conflict and brings distraction to having a positive outcome. If the opportunity presents itself, talk it out. Even through a misunderstanding, there could be a potential opportunity for a positive result. If possible, do not allow a negative experience to remain that way.

Prayer

Lord, we are thankful that even in conflict we can thrive if we are willing to do the necessary work. Help us to not take negative interactions so personally to the point that we lose sight of a bigger picture. Give us the ability to hear, not just with our ears, but our hearts so we can truly advocate for peace and turn conflict into opportunities for growth and positivity. In Jesus' name. Amen.
