A LIFE OF ENDURANCE
READ
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”—Hebrews 12:1–3 (NIV)
REFLECT
Has this week been more challenging than you expected? Are you noticing a stronger temptation to sin or feel more attacked and burdened than usual? This is normal; it’s Satan trying to keep you from walking in your God-given purpose, similar to how he tempted Jesus! While Jesus’ purpose was to reconcile us to God through His life, death, and resurrection, our purpose in Jesus is to love Him and others. Don’t lose heart—you’re not alone!
As you begin the second week of your fast, invite others to go on this journey with you. As both 1 John 1 and James 5tells us, confess these struggles to a trusted Christian and ask them to pray with you so you may experience His joy and share in His glory!
PRAY
Father, I know Your Son was tempted in every way and did not sin. I understand He endured the shame and pain of the cross on my behalf. In light of all this, Lord, I ask for Your protection, comfort, peace, and strength as I walk through the second week of this fast. Help me to fight off attacks from the enemy and surround me with people I can run this race alongside. Amen.
FOR THE FAMILY
DISCUSS
- Why is it hard to run a race with a backpack full of stuff inside? How does sin make it harder for us to run for God?
- We cannot run the race without inviting others to help and run with us. Who in your life do you run after Jesus with, and how can you share the hard things with them?
PRAY
Father, I know Jesus is the perfect example of what it means to live for You. I know I’m not perfect, but I give You my sin and my struggles today. I look to You, Jesus, because You lived and died for me! Help me to live with Your same joy and endurance. Surround me with Your people so we may run this race together and help each other, too. Amen.
