Finding R.E.S.T While Learning to Embrace Your Imperfect Story

DAY 2 OF 6

R-Remember who you are.

As the youngest of three, attending the same schools, activities and organizations as my siblings, I was usually spotted before I walked into a room. “Is that little Kelly?” some would say. I was recognized because of who I came from. There was no anonymity. There was no hiding. All my teachers, classmates, and even their parents knew whose kid I was. When you feel known and understand exactly who you are, it changes everything.

So, who are you? Whose are you? Where did you come from, and does it even make a difference?

When it comes to embracing your imperfect story, there is no greater place to begin than with your sacred identity. Yes, they broke your heart, betrayed your trust, and left you hanging; but that isn’t your identity. It doesn’t define you. Those messy feelings don’t describe who you are. Remember who you are.

You are loved (Romans 8:35), called (Ephesians 4:4), chosen (1 Peter 2:9), forgiven (Hebrews 8:12), healed (1 Peter 2:24), equipped (Hebrews 13:21), changed (2 Corinthian 5:17), redeemed (Luke 1:68), and most importantly His (1 Corinthians 3:23).

No amount of stress, pain, fear, uncertainty, or distrust can change your identity in Christ. When you know who you are it causes you to live, act and see life differently. Imagine you had a one-million-dollar bill in your pocket but didn’t know it. You would walk around looking for ways to make money while having all you need within reach. You would have a scarcity mentality when it should be one of abundance. Friends, this is how we act when we choose to believe lies rather than the truth of who God says that we are.

So, are you spotted as God’s chosen before you walk into the room? Do you tackle your internal unhealed wounds with faith and perseverance as if your Abba Father's grace is reflected in you? Can you rest in the love of God and show a rushed and people-pleasing world that contentment is found in the heart of God?

You are so much more than the totality of all you have been through. God loves you so much He bought you with the priceless blood of Jesus. Don’t let the world and all its problems make you forget who you are. Ever.
