An Answer to Loneliness

“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.’”—Genesis 2:18 (NLT)

In the Bible, we see a lot of number patterns. It’s what we call biblical numerology. Seven is the number of completion, four is the number of creation, three is the number of divine perfection, 12 is the number of governmental perfection, 40 is the number of testing, and, of course . . . one is the loneliest number. That last one is not from the Bible, but from the 70s rock band Three Dog Night. However, I think if you read Genesis 2:18, you could easily make an argument that it’s biblical.

Today’s verse tells us the Lord saw the loneliness of Adam. In his commentary, Bible scholar Joseph Benson wrote, “Though there was an upper world of angels and lower world of brutes, yet, there being none of the same rank of beings with himself, he might be truly said to be alone.” You see, Adam was created in the image and likeness of God. And God is a God of fellowship, of relationship. He is in constant fellowship with us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As such, we were created as social beings, with a need for relationship.

So, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” It’s not pleasant or satisfactory, it’s opposite to his nature. So, God remedied this by bringing Adam a “helper who is just right for him.” Now, the English translation of this phrase does not do it justice. The Cambridge Bible commentary goes as far as to say that this translation “fails to give the full sense of this passage from which it is derived.”

The best, most complete definition I found classifies woman as man’s corresponding equal, adequate to himself; man’s parallel and opposite companion, his completion. To me, this is a beautiful representation of what makes marriage so great: the friendship and companionship... our helper, our equal, our partner in life.

Whether you’re married or plan on being married at some point, always remember that your spouse is, first and foremost, a blessing from God that makes your earthly journey that much sweeter. So, celebrate that friendship, show your spouse how much their companionship means to you, and thank the Lord for them each and every day!
