Sub·mit (Verb) Let Go, Let God!

DAY 1 OF 4

Sub·mit (Verb)

What does the word "submit" mean, and why should I submit to God? These were questions I had when I first came to Christ. Maybe they're yours too, whether you're a new Christian or not. I thought that submitting (or surrendering or yielding) to God would take away my freedom of doing things the way I wanted to in my own strength. I was looking at the word "submit" in a negative way.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, "submit" is a verb meaning "to accept or yield to a superior force or the authority or will of another person." Some synonyms include "surrender," "yield," "relinquish," and "bow."

To the then rebellious teen I was, that didn't sound like fun at all. I wasn't about to submit or surrender to anyone. It was my way or the highway! Does that sound familiar? I know now that way of thinking was very wrong. Submitting or surrendering to God is the beginning of trusting in and relying on him. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not to lean on our own understanding. It tells us that when we submit to God in ALL our ways (not just a few), He will make our paths straight. When God asks us to surrender our will to his, it’s our job to trust he will show us the way.

When you humbly submit to whatever God calls you to and trust that his plans for you are always the best, he will show you favor and so much more! Nothing in this world is ultimately more gratifying than surrendering to God and trusting that his plans will lead and guide you to true freedom and a secure future.

Are you ready to practice the obedience of submitting to God in all your ways to grow in his grace? The word "submit" is a verb, and a verb describes an action. Are you actively willing to "let go and let God?" Is there anything holding you back from surrendering to God? Is it fear, pride, a sin that you're holding onto, or perhaps a sense of self-sufficiency? Pray and ask God to reveal your heart attitude about submitting to him. God will hear you just as he heard Jesus when he prayed in reverent submission during his life on earth.
