Christian Leadership

DAY 5 OF 5

The Art Of Decision-Making

Leading as a Christian in decision-making is an art we can develop over time if we are willing to let the Lord search us and deal with any offensive ways in us, as King David did. Before God raised people into leadership roles they were often drawn into a wilderness experience where listening to God in solitude was developed and selfish ambitions were stripped away. Think of Moses in the desert, and King David as a shepherd, and Jesus in the desert.

Spiritual formation and practices, character development, and reflective collaborative practice will inform the way a Christian leader makes decisions. These ways of being can safeguard the leader’s heart from being pulled this way and that, while also remaining open to hearing God’s wisdom through others. Listening to only one view in decision-making, especially in this age of polarised media, lacks wisdom.

I’ve found that remembering I’m a part of a bigger God story helps me keep my decision-making aligned with the heart of God. The vision of a world where people know the God who loves them and live out of that love remains the inspiration for decision-making that seeks God’s justice and helps me remain non-anxious in the process.
