DAY 6 OF 7

Precarious Love

This statement certainly would confuse a secular mind. It simply means that worldliness should not rule our lives. Jesus said They are not of the world, even as I am not of it (Jn 17:16). He says not to love the world (i.e., position, power, adoration, earthly praise, and accolades) or the things of this world (i.e., gold, wealth, and possessions).

What is the difference between having and loving the things of the world? A rich young ruler came to Jesus and asked Him a pertinent question. “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Lk 18:18). Jesus reminded him of the commandments. The ruler replied “all these I have kept since I was a boy” to which the Lord Jesus said “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me”. - vv 21, 22

His religion and love for God were coupled with an earthly attachment. Jesus pointed out his lack but the ruler could not part with his earthly belongings. Now that’s the difference. If he had a real love for Jesus, then parting with material things wouldn’t have been a difficulty. The Bible says, When he heard this, he became very sad - v 23. We don’t see another man leaving sorrowfully after meeting Jesus. For him, eternal life meant nothing in comparison to his perishable earthly possessions.

In this world, we yearn to make a better living. How many of us would be ready to Let Go in the office to glorify Jesus? Just as all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, similarly, all work and no godliness would lead to spiritual dullness and desolation. Certainly, God would not withhold an official promotion or an increment from His child. However, if there is a delay, then expect a sure blessing in His appointed time. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you (Mt 6:33, NAS). Let us show our allegiance to God by loving Him more than anything else.

O Lord, teach us the love of the Father in our earthly walk. Amen

About this Plan

Grass Yonder Greener

Even a king with all his wealth and grandeur found another man’s vineyard appealing in I Kings 21. Irrespective of our official position, greed can get the better of us at unguarded moments. But covetousness has no place in godliness. Aldrin Joseph calls us to examine ourselves today since gaining riches and wealth will not satiate the spirit which is famished with deep spiritual hunger.
