The Gospel of Mark

DAY 1 OF 42

John the baptizer had an important calling. His job was to preach repentance to all who would hear because Jesus, the Messiah, was coming. It was not an easy calling. In strange clothes with strange habits, John preached a strange message: repent and be baptized. John knew Jesus was on His way. ⁣

⁣John knew what Jesus had come to do because he knew the Scriptures, and they pointed to Jesus. While he baptized with water, Jesus would bring an even greater gift, the Holy Spirit. John proclaimed Jesus’ deity. Jesus was baptized by John, showing His humility and His purpose. ⁣

⁣The Gospel of Mark continually asks (and answers) the question, “Who is Jesus?” John provided the first answer, recognizing the deity and power of Christ before any miracle had been performed. ⁣

⁣Lord, thank You for Your faithful servant, John. I pray that You would impart in me the same kind of devotion and faithfulness to proclaim who You are. Amen.

As we study the Bible, we use the SOAP Bible Study Method. The acronym stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

The SOAP Method includes four steps:

1. Scripture. Write out the verses at least one time. Slow down and copy the passage from the text, focusing on what you are writing. Writing it more than one time is always helpful.

2. Observation. Take time to carefully observe the passage. What do you see in the verses you’re reading? Who is the intended audience? To whom is the writer speaking? What cultural factors are at play? Are any words or themes repeated? What literary devices are being used?

3. Application. After carefully observing what is happening in the passage, determine the main message or truth of the passage. How can you apply this truth to your life?

4. Prayer. Pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time, pray about it. Confess any sin God has revealed. Pray through the truth of the passage.

About this Plan

The Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark is a powerful account of the life of Jesus. It displays the character of Jesus on every page, from His willingness to suffer and serve to His power and deity miraculously displayed. With every scene the author asks, “Where is your faith?” As we read and study the Gospel of Mark we can’t help but answer this important question.
