"Who is Jesus? He is the Saviour"
John the Baptist was reluctant to baptise Jesus, how could he baptise Jesus the Messiah and the Saviour? He should be baptised by Jesus and not the other way round. The name Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshua which means deliverer or saviour. And this name was given to Jesus Christ by God himself as the purpose of his coming as a man was to save mankind from eternal punishment. Jesus is the saviour – through his sacrificial death on Calvary, he has purchased our forgiveness. And when we put our faith in him and in what he has done for us, our sins are forgiven and he gives us the Holy Spirit to live in us. We are ‘born again’ – this is what Jesus told Nicodemus, the Jewish religious leader in John 3 – ‘you need to be born again to enter the Kingdom of God, you need to be born of water and the Spirit’. Jesus saves – and there are so many dimensions to the salvation we have in Christ – the forgiveness of sins, a new relationship with God and others, a transformed heart, a spiritual sensitivity to the things of God, the assurance of eternal life with God and so much more. Jesus is truly the Saviour!
Heavenly Father, we thank and worship you for Jesus our saviour and Lord. We thank you for the riches of the salvation we have in Christ and we want to continue to live in the goodness of all that this salvation gives to us. In Jesus’ name.
