True North: Leading Your Family Spiritually

DAY 5 OF 8

You may be wondering… “What can I do to help lead my family to be closer to Christ?” The answer is simply, serving Christ. Recognize that God is always wanting to work something in you and out of you. God is going to work generously on you. To work humility into you, He first has to work pride out of you.

Serving is a fantastic way for God to work humility, generosity, trust, and more into you. When your family witnesses you laying down your own selfish desires to serve others, and serve God, they are being shown that those things are important and impactful.

I see couples come in for counseling that will share that their children are selfish and entitled. I usually ask them about how they spend their time as parents and as a family. It usually goes something like this: “We are crazy busy with football practice, dance rehearsal, piano practice, and more.” It all revolves around the children and their schedules. I'm not saying sports, band, or other extracurriculars are “bad.” They aren’t, but like anything else, these things should be in moderation.

If you don’t have time to serve because your schedule revolves around your children's activities… you are allowing your children to think they are the priority. This breeds entitlement. Let your children see you serving God, then wait and see the results.

Question: What has my perspective of serving been? How can I start serving?
