What Courage Looks Like

DAY 3 OF 7

You can trust God with your giants.

Maybe you’ve heard the legendary story of David and Goliath before, or maybe you haven’t, and that’s okay. It’s one of those famous Bible stories that makes you ready to take on the world because it’s such a heroic act of courage. Let’s break it down really quickly, but you’ll read the full story in 1 Samuel today.

Basically, there’s this huge giant who’s threatening God’s people and God’s army. Everyone is so terrified of this giant that they aren’t fighting him, and the giant is taunting them about it. Meanwhile, David is a young shepherd boy. His whole life, he’s protected sheep from wolves, bears, and other creatures. So he’s no stranger to fear. He knows that God has always been faithful to him by helping him protect his sheep. Just as David protects his sheep, God has been protecting David.

So, David goes to check on his older brothers who are in the army, and he gets fired up that no one is fighting this giant. So David tells Saul, the commander of the army, that he wants to be the one to fight the giant.

Saul tells David he’s too young, too small, and too unqualified. But David knows it doesn’t matter what people say about him; it only matters what God says. So David fights the giant anyway, using just a slingshot and some stones. How crazy is that?!

David goes up to the giant, and using his slingshot, slings a stone right into the giant’s eyes and knocks him out. Then David kills the giant with a sword. For real. Seriously, the Bible is super interesting, and you should spend time reading it because it’s got some amazing stories like that. So, let’s break down the kind of trust David had in God in today’s video:

See, David didn’t defeat the giant because David was awesome. He defeated the giant because God is awesome! The battle belonged to God all along, and God helped David defeat Goliath and countless other obstacles throughout his lifetime.

You may not face any real giants. But you may face a lot of things you’re afraid of—things that feel impossible to fight. It could be fear of failure, fear of not fitting in, fear of the unknown—or so many other things. But just like David, trust that the battle is God’s. You can trust in God’s strength, and you can trust God with your giants.

What Courage Looks Like

You may feel like you don’t have what it takes to be courageous, but what if courage looks different than you think? Courage isn’t always taking huge leaps of faith—it starts with taking baby steps into the unknown. Through this 7-day Bible Plan featuring videos from The Loop Show, we’ll take a look at what courage really is and why we can have courage through Christ.
