There is so much wisdom and guidance that we can glean from Proverbs 31. It’s truth that we can live by and apply to our lives. 

Scripture tells us: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.”

Consider: What is justice and what does it mean to us?

Justice is defined as “morally right behaviour and treatment of people”. If something is important to God then it should be important to us too. And something that is important to God is justice for anyone, anywhere. God call us not only to ensure justice but to also act justly. Throughout the Bible, living justly is a consistent theme. 

Micah 6 v 8 says “No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what He requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.”

Context: Why bother?

Let’s think about it for a minute - we all like the sound of justice because we want things to be fair. We believe that people who have cheated or lied should be punished. That may sound a little harsh, but it’s true. We want the people who’ve done wrong to be held accountable. But when we look at justice through the power of the cross, it changes how we view justice and it shifts our perspective. Someone had to pay for the sin in the world and it should have been us. Instead, God sent His only Son to die a painful death on the cross to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sin. That is God’s justice.
