Let’s look at this scripture in four different translation and view it through four different lenses:

“When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly.” (MSG)

“When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” (NLT)

“She speaks wise words and teaches others to be kind.” (NCV)

“She opens her mouth in [skillful and godly] wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue [giving counsel and instruction].” (Amplified)

I want to be known as someone who has the teaching of kindness on her tongue. As someone who always says it kindly. What a challenge. Do you give instructions with kindness? Are your words wise?

Consider: What is kindness?

What comes to mind when you think of kindness? What does that practically look like? Maybe it’s a card from a friend. Maybe it’s a hug or a shoulder to cry on. Maybe it’s someone going out of their way for you. Whatever it is that comes to mind, it’s likely to be something that makes you feel good inside. Because that’s what kindness does. When we’re kind, other people get to experience some of God’s character - whether or not they recognize that that is what it is. When we are kind to the people around us, it does something much deeper in them because it reveals the work of Jesus in our lives. 

Context: Why bother?

The greatest example of kindness that we will ever know is through the life of Jesus himself. The world was broken, full of hurt and despair. The situation was hopeless. But God stepped in and sent Jesus to rescue the earth. We didn’t deserve this kindness but God didn’t give us what we deserved. Instead He gave us the greatest gift we could ever receive.

• Who is the kindest woman you know? How does she show kindness to those around her? What can you learn from her?
• Choose three people that you can show kindness to this week? What small (or big) things can you do to be kind to them?
