The Character of God
When we truly understand who God is, it transforms how we live. His character isn't just a list of attributes - it's the foundation of our freedom. Just as knowing a close friend's character helps us trust them more deeply, knowing God's character allows us to rest securely in His love and promises.
In Exodus 34:6-7, God reveals Himself to Moses as "compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness." This wasn't just true for Moses - it's who God is, yesterday, today, and forever. When we struggle with anxiety, doubt, or fear, we can anchor ourselves in these unchanging truths about who God is:
- He is a loving Father who cares deeply for His children (1 John 3:1)
- He is faithful, even when we are not (2 Timothy 2:13)
- He is unchanging - His character remains constant (Hebrews 13:8)
- He is sovereign, working all things for our good (Romans 8:28)
Think about the Israelites' journey through the wilderness. God demonstrated His character consistently:
- His provision - giving them manna daily
- His patience - keeping His promises despite the 40 year journey to the promised land
- His presence - guiding them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night
- His protection - defending them from their enemies
To grow in freedom, choose one attribute of God that you need to trust in right now. Maybe it's His faithfulness during uncertainty, His patience when you feel like you keep failing, or His love when you feel unlovable. Throughout the day, remind yourself of this truth about who God is.
Prayer: Father, thank You for revealing Your character to us through Your Word and through our experiences with You. Help me to truly know You, not just know about You. When circumstances tempt me to doubt, anchor me in the truth of who You are. Let Your unchanging character be the foundation of my freedom. In Jesus' name, amen.
