Freedom is a Choice
Freedom in Christ isn't passive - it's an active choice we make each day. Just as the Israelites had to physically walk out of Egypt, we too must choose to walk in the freedom Christ has already secured for us. This journey often begins in our minds, where we face the daily choice between anxiety and peace, worry and trust.
When anxiety threatens to overwhelm us, God's Word provides a clear pathway to peace through Philippians 4:6-8. Let's break it down:
Philippians 4:6 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Step 1 - Pray. Start with thanksgiving, it's important we remember everything we already have, everything He's already done, everything He already is. That's where gratitude comes from, and when you remember what He has already done, you can trust Him when you are asking for all that He can do. Prayer brings you into the presence of the One who gives you the peace that transcends all understanding. (Philippians 4:7)
Philippians 4:8 "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."
Step 2 - You have to choose what to think about. This verse instructs us to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, and lovely… not what could be, not what might be, or what might never happen. He is telling us step-by-step in His word how to be anxious for nothing.
Every day presents us with choices:
- Who do I serve? God or myself?
- What will I think about? Worries or things above?
- How will I live? In relationship with Jesus, living from the Spirit or from my flesh? "Surrendered or trying to control? Forgiving or holding unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger?
In Isaiah 26:3, God promises Shalom to those who trust in Him. "Shalom is Perfect Peace. What is perfect peace? It is nothing missing, nothing broken."
What do you choose?
Prayer: Father, thank You for the freedom to choose. Help me to consistently choose Your way over my own. When anxiety creeps in, remind me to turn to You in prayer and fix my thoughts on what is true. Give me the courage to walk in the freedom You've provided. In Jesus' name, amen.
