In the Hospital? Comfort and Encouragement for You

DAY 1 OF 7

You’re Not Alone

Even after visiting hours are over. Even when the lights go out. When it feels like just you and the beeping machines (or the snoring roommate you haven’t really met) … you are not alone. God is with you all the way through this. He sees you, He knows you, and He loves you.

Depending on the reason you’re in the hospital, this experience may feel like a disaster. If so, that’s where Psalm 57 comes in:

Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. Psalm 57:1 NIV

God is your very present refuge during your whole hospital stay—in the morning, at noon, and all night. When you get wheeled out for surgery, when you awaken after it, and when you’re struggling with pain management and uncertainty of next steps, He is there with you.

When you’re feeling ill, weak, vulnerable, and anxious, He has hope and strength for you—for this moment. And the next. It won’t always be like this, and you’re going to get through it one breath at a time, holding His hand.

God is not going to leave you. He’s got love and faithfulness to show you in the middle of all the tough things happening. You can rest in His presence. Even the darkness is light to Him. In this world, there’s trouble, but Jesus tells us to take heart because He’s still the One in charge.

Take your time slowly reading today’s Scriptures, one verse at a time. Tell God how you feel and what you need. If you don’t know where to start, try this prayer below and adapt it to be your own.

A Place to Start in Prayer

God, thank You that You will never leave me alone. Make me strong and courageous for each minute and every stage of this health journey. I give you my fear, my worry, and my pain. I ask You for help. Have mercy on me and my loved ones. I take refuge in You.

Be my rock and heal me completely. Guide all the medical staff and bless them too. Somehow make me a blessing in the middle of all this. Be the strength of my heart. I’m trusting You, so I will not be shaken. You are my security in the dark. Thank You for being with me no matter what. I believe You are stronger than everything I’m facing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
