Plan for the Journey
Now that you’ve defined your vision, and written down your values, create a realistic plan for your journey toward becoming the person you want to become. This is where you take your faith and intentions and determine how to bring them to reality.
First, assess your strengths and talents. Don’t do this alone. Ask a few trusted family members, friends, and advisors to confirm that they see the same strengths and talents that you do. They may even help point out others that you weren’t aware of. These are your unique contributions to the world. They are not meant to be hoarded or used solely for personal gain but to enrich the lives of those around you. In using your gifts for the benefit of others, you find fulfillment and purpose.
What are your strengths? What are your talents? What are your weaknesses? Where do you need to improve? One of the first steps of planning in business and corporate environments is identifying SWOTs—strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Apply the knowledge and processes of countless companies to set yourself up for success. Recognize what your assets are and how you can best leverage them to meet the opportunities you have before you. Take your liabilities into consideration and determine how to minimize them.
Next, set tangible goals and milestones that will help you progress toward your vision. These goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). They provide a road map for your journey and help you stay focused and motivated.
Consider the historical figure of King David. Ancient inscriptions, corroborated by other archaeological findings, tell of his legacy. The Bible tells us that David began his career as he served his family by tending its flocks. He relied on his faith to defeat Goliath and to serve King Saul. He honed his skills as he matured, not for personal glory, but to serve his people. He became a mighty warrior and was eventually crowned as Israel’s king. He served the nation for many years with mixed results. In his failures, David sought redemption and growth, continually striving to align his actions with his Purpose.
David’s story is a powerful reminder that understanding and defining our identity is a dynamic process. It involves moments of triumph and failure, all contributing to who we are becoming. David’s life exemplifies the journey of embracing one’s gifts, serving others, and continually seeking to grow in alignment with one’s Purpose.
God, I thank You for David’s example. The journey ahead may be difficult. It will have ups and downs. Help me to plan and persevere to fulfill Your Purpose for me.
