God's Hope for Orphans: Every Child Deserves a FamilySýnishorn
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be…” (Psalm 139:13-16)
In this passage, the great poet and king of Israel, David, reflects on the wonder and value of his life. David knows that even before his parents laid eyes on him, God was intimately aware of how his body was being formed—and even knew how many days David would be permitted to walk the Earth. And if that weren’t amazing enough, David marvels in the reality that the God of all creation would have countless precious thoughts about him. That sentiment is echoed in Psalm 8. “Who are we that you would even think of us, God?” David wonders. “Why us, in all of our frailty?”
For reasons beyond our wildest imaginations, God is passionate about people. What amazed David should also amaze us. God loves you, me, and every human being more than we can ever comprehend. The cross of Jesus reinforces this truth. God loves us so much that He would rather die than live without us!
This truth should not only overwhelm us, but it should inform and inspire our actions toward others. Every human being is cherished, held precious in God’s heart. Therefore, when we see an orphaned and vulnerable child, we are motivated to do our very best to care for them in a way that reflects this immense love God has for us.
How would we want our own children, whom we love more than life itself, to be cared for if something were to happen to us? We would want them cared for in a loving family! None of us would prefer that our child be raised in the cold environment of an orphanage rather than the warmth of a family. Even the best orphanage cannot replicate the personalized care and individual attention found within a family. Every child deserves a family so they can feel what it is like to be loved and cherished—the way we are loved and cherished by our Creator.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for the overwhelming love you have for us, a love far beyond our understanding. Thank you for holding each and every one of us precious in your heart. We pray that this truth will transform our hearts and guide our actions toward others, especially the orphaned and vulnerable children who long for the love of a family. Inspire us to reflect Your love in all we do, ensuring that every child experiences the care and belonging they deserve. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
