Daily Bible Reading— October 2024, God’s Guiding Word: Justice and PeaceSýnishorn
October 16
Introduction
Isaiah 5:1–7: Today’s reading is in the form of a song about a vineyard in which the sins of the people of Jerusalem and Judah are compared to sour grapes.
Today’s Key Verse: Isaiah 5:7a
Israel is the vineyard of the LORD Almighty; the people of Judah are the vines he planted.
Reflect
Today’s reading is known as “the song of the vineyard,” a poetic parable that describes God’s relationship with the people of Judah. God is depicted as the one who planted a vineyard. How is the relationship between God and the people described? What questions does God ask (verse 4)? What will God do (verses 5–6)? What did God expect of the people (verse 7)? Can this image of a vineyard be used to describe God’s relationship with people today? Why or why not?
Pray
Almighty God, I sing your praises. In love you nurture me so that I grow in faith day by day. Teach me to obey your teachings so that I become a fruitful disciple. May my words and deeds this day reflect your love and grace. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Isaiah 5:8–30: Social injustice is condemned.
