The Purpose of Christmas

DAY 5 OF 15

If you’ve had a child or been close to someone who has, then you know what an exciting time it is in the life of that family. Though there weren’t birth announcements, baby showers, and picture-perfect family photos on Instagram thousands of years ago, the excitement surrounding Jesus’ birth topped the charts.

Just imagine what it was like for Mary and Joseph. Sure, the backdrop of the birth wasn’t what they expected. Nobody plans to give birth in a place for animals, after all. Yet because they were bringing a baby into the world who would one day save that very world, they and everyone who believed were bursting with excitement. It wasn’t a small event or an ordinary experience, and that’s not just because it was a birth set against the backdrop of extraordinary experiences. It was a big deal because it was the gift the world was waiting for. It’s the gift that changed everything back then and still changes everything for us today. And that is something worth celebrating!

Today, think about ways you can celebrate what the birth of Jesus means for you! Talk to a spouse, friend, family member, or your small group about how you plan to celebrate the purpose of Christmas this season.
