DAY 8 OF 13

SIN and Submission to God

Scripture Reading: James 4:1-10 (NASB 2020)

Opening Scripture:
"What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is the source not your pleasures that wage war in your body’s parts? You lust and do not have, so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask." (James 4:1-2)

Devotional:

James addresses the root causes of conflict and sin among believers, pointing to selfish desires and passions. He calls us to submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God. Through submission and humility, we find the grace and strength to overcome sin and live in harmony with one another.

  1. Root of Conflicts: James identifies selfish desires and passions as the root of quarrels and conflicts. When we prioritize our desires over God’s will, it leads to envy, strife, and even destructive behaviors. Our sinful nature battles within us, causing discord and division.
  2. Submission to God: The solution to overcoming sin and conflict is to submit to God. Submission involves surrendering our desires and aligning our will with God’s. When we humble ourselves before God, He gives us the grace to resist the devil and overcome temptation.
  3. Drawing Near to God: James urges us to draw near to God, promising that He will draw near to us. This intimate relationship with God is essential for spiritual growth and victory over sin. As we seek God’s presence through prayer, worship, and studying His Word, we find strength and guidance.
  4. Purifying Our Hearts: James calls us to cleanse our hands and purify our hearts, ridding ourselves of double-mindedness. Genuine repentance and humility lead to spiritual renewal. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He exalts us and brings healing to our lives and relationships.

Applications:

  1. Identify Selfish Desires: Examine your heart for selfish desires and passions that cause conflicts. Bring these desires before God in prayer. (James 4:1-2)
  2. Submit to God: Surrender your will to God and seek to align your desires with His. Trust in His plan and purpose for your life. (James 4:7)
  3. Draw Near to God: Cultivate a close relationship with God through prayer, worship, and His Word. Seek His presence daily. (James 4:8)
  4. Repent and Purify: Repent of any sin and purify your heart through genuine humility and submission to God. Allow Him to cleanse and renew you. (James 4:8-10)

Closing Prayer:

Father God, we acknowledge our selfish desires and the conflicts they cause. Help us to submit to You, resist the devil, and draw near to Your presence. Cleanse our hearts and purify our minds, that we may live in humility and obedience. Thank You for Your grace and the promise that You will lift us up. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
