Wisdom and Jealousy
Scripture Reading: James 3:14-18 (NASB 2020)
Opening Scripture:
"But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing." (James 3:14-16)
Devotional:
James contrasts two kinds of wisdom: earthly and heavenly. Earthly wisdom is characterized by jealousy and selfish ambition, leading to disorder and evil. In contrast, heavenly wisdom produces peace, gentleness, and good fruits. As believers, we are called to seek and demonstrate heavenly wisdom in our lives.
- Earthly Wisdom: James describes earthly wisdom as rooted in jealousy and selfish ambition. This type of wisdom is not from God but is earthly, unspiritual, and even demonic. It leads to disorder and every kind of evil practice. Jealousy and selfish ambition corrupt our hearts and relationships, causing strife and division.
- Heavenly Wisdom: In contrast, heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, and without hypocrisy. This wisdom reflects the character of Christ and brings harmony and righteousness. It is a gift from God, cultivated through prayer and a close relationship with Him.
- The Fruits of Wisdom: Heavenly wisdom produces good fruits in our lives. It promotes peace and understanding, encouraging healthy relationships and community. It is consistent, sincere, and marked by mercy. When we live by heavenly wisdom, our actions reflect God’s love and righteousness.
- Cultivating Heavenly Wisdom: To cultivate heavenly wisdom, we must first rid ourselves of jealousy and selfish ambition. We seek God’s wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and living in obedience to His teachings. As we grow in heavenly wisdom, our lives become a testimony to God’s grace and truth.
Applications:
- Reject Earthly Wisdom: Identify and reject jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart. Seek to root out these destructive attitudes. (James 3:14-16)
- Pursue Heavenly Wisdom: Pray for heavenly wisdom and seek it through studying God’s Word and living in obedience. (James 3:17)
- Promote Peace and Gentleness: Let your actions and interactions reflect the peace, gentleness, and mercy of heavenly wisdom. Be a peacemaker in your community. (James 3:17-18)
- Examine Your Motives: Regularly examine your motives to ensure they align with God’s wisdom. Let His truth guide your decisions and relationships. (James 3:17)
Closing Prayer:
Father God, we thank You for the gift of wisdom. Help us to reject earthly wisdom and the attitudes of jealousy and selfish ambition. Fill us with Your heavenly wisdom, that we may live lives that reflect Your peace, gentleness, and mercy. Guide our hearts and minds, so that our actions bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
