Single and Not Sorry: Devotions of Real Encouragement for Right NowSýnishorn
Grounded in God
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
II TIMOTHY 1:7 NLT
How does your singleness make you feel? You’ve likely gone through moments of contentment, angst, frustration, fear, and exasperation . . . maybe all in the same day! Being single in a world that applauds relationships is an emotional undertaking. So maybe the better question is, How does your singleness make you feel right now? Maybe you’ve been burned by a past relationship and are daunted by the idea of dating again. Maybe you’ve been single for a while and are happy with that, but you’re afraid of what others will think about your mindset. Maybe you long for a relationship, and the dissatisfaction has left you tired and defeated. Can you imagine if, instead of this storm of emotions, you felt empowered, loved, and confident? This wealth of goodness is what God has called you to. As our verse today shows, you can live a life of singleness—whether for a day, a year, or a lifetime—that overflows with God-given strength.
It’s a mindset shift to realize that God has called you to be empowered, self-controlled, and loved. But in a season that is filled to overflowing with emotions, how is this mindset shift attainable? It’s all about centring yourself in Him. This could look like prayer, journaling, going for a walk, or listening to worship music. It could mean slowing down and baking, gardening, or creating. Find an activity that fills your soul and makes you feel more connected to God. Just like the uniqueness of singleness, it’s okay if your time with Him doesn’t look like other people’s time with God. You’ll notice that as you dwell in His presence and learn more about Him, it’s natural for goodness to begin to overflow. By being aware of God’s gifts meant for you—such as power, love, and self-discipline—you can reject the lies related to your singleness as they come up. Ground yourself in Him, and even when hard feelings come, you can stand strong.
Right Now Reminder:
You will have overwhelming times of sadness and frustration, but God is not a God of fear and of lack, and the more you lean into Him, the more you’ll find that you have a solid foundation—one that fills you with all the power, love, and sustenance you need.
