Comfort in Anxiety

DAY 6 OF 7

God's hornets

“I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites from before you.” (Exodus 23:28)

We need not dwell on what the hornets were; they were God's own army sent ahead of His people to sting their enemies and make Israel's conquest easier. Our God, through His chosen methods, fights for His people and troubles their adversaries even before the battle begins. Often, He bewilders opponents of truth using means that reformers themselves have no part in. The atmosphere is teeming with mysterious forces that harass the enemies of Israel. As mentioned in the Apocalypse, "the earth helped the woman” (see Revelation 12:15-16).

Let us never be afraid. The celestial bodies themselves fight against the adversaries of our souls. Many times, as we march into battle, we find no opposing force to contend with. “The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” God's hornets are more effective than our weapons. We could never imagine victory being achieved through the means the Lord will employ. We must obey our orders and venture forth to conquer nations for Jesus, knowing that the Lord has already gone ahead of us and prepared the way. In the end, we will gladly acknowledge, "His own right hand and His holy arm have brought Him victory.”
