Daily Bible Reading – August 2023, God’s Saving Word: Encouragement

DAY 16 OF 31

August 16

Introduction

In the apostle Paul's Second Letter to the Thessalonians, he emphasizes the need for believers to remain steadfast in their faith, despite trouble and suffering, to work for a living as did Paul and his companions, and to persevere in doing good. In today's reading, Paul greets the Thessalonians and expresses thanks that their faith is growing along with their love for one another. He writes of God's judgment on those who reject God and the Good News about Jesus.

Scripture Reading

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

Today’s Key Verse: 2 Thessalonians 1:11b

We ask our God to make you worthy of the life he has called you to live. May he fulfill by his power all your desire for goodness and complete your work of faith.

Reflect

For what does Paul commend the Thessalonians (verse 4)? Reread verses 6-10. How does Paul describe God's judgment on those who have rejected God? What words of encouragement does he offer the Thessalonians because they have believed the Good News about Jesus?

Pray

Lord God, I believe in the Good News about the Lord Jesus. Fulfill my desire for goodness and continue to strengthen my faith day by day so that all I do and say is in accord with your will. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

2 Thessalonians 2:1-17: The apostle Paul speaks of the "Wicked One" who will deceive the people with falsehoods.
