DAY 5 OF 5

Connecting to God's Superpowers

When we give up on measuring up and embrace imperfection to receive God's grace, we have to get practical about plugging into God for our power source. We lead endlessly busy lives as moms. Because our work never stops, we have to stay constantly connected to the true power source. It's like when our phones are running every app in the background while playing a podcast and downloading some videos for our kids. It's doing a lot, so it needs to stay connected to power throughout the day. It can't just get 30 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes before bed. That busy phone is going to need to be plugged in all day.

You, dear Mommy, are running a whole bunch of apps at the same time. You’ve got housekeeper, nurse, teacher, accountant, cook, friend, caretaker, entertainer, and more constantly running. You must stay permanently connected to God’s superpower.

The Bible has a special term for staying connected: abide. In John 15, Jesus calls himself the vine. If we don’t stay connected to the vine, we are just dead, fruitless branches. I know the term abide feels ambiguous, so let me break it down for you: Take your most important human relationship, whether it be your husband, your mom, or a friend. Now think about how you stay connected to that person throughout your day.

Do you spend 30 minutes with that person in the morning and then forget them until bedtime? I bet you talk, text, and email. You probably think of them often. I bet that person even impacts your decision-making. You consider that person’s thoughts and feelings as you go through the routine of your day. All of those things are signs of abiding, sticking close to your special person.

Just like your most important person, your relationship to Jesus should inform your day. Decisions, from simple to complex, are made in light of your relationship to God. Your thoughts are constantly being pulled back to him. His character impacts how you live. You can’t pull a branch in and out of its vine and expect it to live a fruitful existence. It has to stay put. All of its sustenance must be derived from the unending source of the vine.

Motherhood is continual sanctification, and I need to keep feeding God's truth to my wandering heart. If I've kept my eye on God throughout the day, when the time comes that I need advice or encouragement, I don't immediately text a friend. I check-in with the One I've been connected to all day.

Dear Depleted Mommy, your life doesn’t have to stop for you to receive God. Hold your precious world in open arms before the God who built the little world around you. Let the mundane moments of your day and the blessings you receive and the mountains you must climb be a path to knowing God intimately. No need to search farther than the end of your rope to find God waiting for you. Then you will be an unsupermommy empowered by God's superpowered grace.
