Scripture
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
Summary
In the Bible, priests represent God to the people. They also stand on behalf of the people before a Holy God. Priests are mediators. They stand between two parties and help them come together. As Christians, we are now priests. We should represent God to the people we encounter. When people observe us, they should have a better understanding of what God is truly like. We should represent Him rightly. Peter calls this "proclaiming His excellencies", and we do this through our life, our conduct, and our speech. When you stand on the stage (or when you are off of the stage) is your life representing the excellencies of God to others? Are you fulfilling your calling as a priest?
Discussion Questions
1. What are some ways we represent God to people?
2. What are some ways we can represent the people before a holy God?
3. Share a story of a time you have represented God well? If you're brave, share a time when you have not.
4. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?
Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank you that you are the ultimate High Priest. You represented God perfectly while you were on earth. You are our perfect mediator. Thank you that when God the Father looks at us, He sees you standing in the gap, covering over our sins. Thank you for fulfilling your role as High Priest. Help us to now fulfill our role as your representatives. Help us to bring others into your Kingdom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
