Displaying the Greatness of God in Your Life

DAY 3 OF 6

Most of us experience life in three major segments:

  • Personal Life
  • Family Life
  • Work Life

These areas reflect our life responsibilities. Your overarching mission of life is to make God look great, and these three areas form mission-critical paths in applying God’s weight to your life. The mission of your life is to be accomplished in these missions in life. If you are to bring glory to the Father as your mission, God must increase His weight in each of these areas. Only then will your missions in life fulfill your ultimate mission of life.

As you examine the three areas, ask the following exploratory questions: What? So what? Now what?

What? What does the Bible say about the issue? We are not talking about preferences. We must find out the precepts of Scripture on each of these issues. Precepts are the clear statements of Scripture that rule a particular area of life. Study these subjects. Do it at your pace. Compile the answers you discern as God’s word comments on particular and pertinent subjects that need your attention.

So What? What does the Bible ask of me regarding each of these areas? The claims of the Bible should be drawn first from the plain precepts of Scripture. However, if you don’t see a clear precept in Scripture on a given issue, look for patterns that occur throughout the Bible. The nature of Scripture is to govern areas of life by means of precept first, and then pattern. Ask, “What Scriptural pattern must I follow or obey in a given situation? In the light of that pattern, where should I change?”

Now What? How do I go about practicing what the Scripture teaches? We often need the wisdom of mentors and pastors to furnish us strategies for obedience. Practical strategies are not prescriptions—like Scriptural precepts or patterns. Rather, they are preferences for a particular person or context. We cannot make these preferences absolute, or we would fall into legalism.

As a final exercise, reflect on the following three questions:

  • In which areas of my life today is God a mere “light-weight”?
  • Where and how can God increase His weight, influence, and presence?
  • What areas of my life need spiritual attention and action?

You will be amazed at His Spirit’s conviction and proposals for your intentional consideration. Write them down and plan a course of obedience. This basic process will move you well on the way and at your own pace toward more intentional living.
