Faith Foundations - How to Follow JesusSýnishorn
Jesus is God’s son who was sent to earth to pay the price for our sins (the things that God doesn’t want us to do) by dying, but He didn’t stay dead! He rose again and anyone who makes Him the boss of their life is called a Christian. Followers of Jesus (Christians) do what He says while they are living on earth, and one day when they die, they get to live in Heaven forever with Jesus! It’s great news!
We want to follow Jesus and do what He says to do, but how do we know what to do?
Great question! The Bible (God’s Word) gives us instructions. In fact, Jesus preached a famous sermon called the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and He gives us instructions on how to follow Him!
This sermon is called the “Sermon on the Mount” because He literally taught on a hill. The exact location of the “mount” or hill is not known, but that’s okay, we know what Jesus said, and that’s the most important thing. Jesus preached this sermon or taught these lessons shortly after spending 40 days and nights in the desert without food or water! As if being thirsty and hungry wasn’t bad enough, Satan came to tempt Jesus trying to get Jesus to sin—but Jesus resisted Satan by quoting the Bible (God’s Word). This means Jesus knew God’s Word, which means He had read it or had heard it read many times. Actually, Jesus was God’s Word in the flesh. You, too, can read and listen to God’s Word, and it will teach you how to follow Jesus and live your life in a way that pleases Him.
Read: Matthew 7:24-27; Matthew 4:1-11; John 1:14
Reflect: What do these verses teach you about God, about who He is and what He’s like? How do you think these verses relate to your life?
Pray: Prayer is simply talking to God. You can pray anywhere. You can pray quietly, out loud, with a friend, or with a group of people. Right now, pray quietly by yourself. Thank God for giving you the Bible, His Word to help you know how to live your life. Ask God to help you follow all the things He asks you to do.
