Asking for alms or the hand of God
Dr. Haddon Robinson said, "When our kids were little, we played a game. I will put some coins in my hand. They would sit on my lap and try to open my fingers. According to the rules of this game that apply internationally, when one finger has been successfully opened, that finger cannot be closed again. So they will keep trying until they get the coin that I hold. It’s just a game.”
Sometimes we come to God to get a coin in His hand – 'Lord, I ask that I can pass', 'Lord, I need a job', 'Lord, I want to be blessed.'
We are trying to get the coins. When God answers our prayers, we push the hand away.
More important than a coin in God's hand is God's hand.
That's the meaning of prayer.
Reflection:
In our prayer life, we often focus on things we want to get through our prayers and forget to focus on God that can answer our prayers. Are we always looking for the answers to our prayers more than looking for God who can answer our prayers? Focus our attention on God in our prayers 0 and not on the things we ask from Him.
We often treat prayer as a transaction rather than an opportunity to connect with God. (Anonymous)
