Daily Bible Reading – May 2022 God’s Renewing Word of PromiseSýnishorn
May 25
Introduction
Chapters 3 and 4 recount the deaths of Abner (the commander of Saul’s army) and Ishbosheth (one of Saul’s sons whom Abner had made king of Israel) following a battle between David’s forces and the forces loyal to Saul’s family. In today’s reading, the leaders of the northern tribes (Israel) accept David as king. David leads a united Israel in capturing Jerusalem from the Jebusites.
Scripture Reading
2 Samuel 5:1-16
Today’s Key Verse: 2 Samuel 5:3
So all the leaders of Israel came to King David at Hebron. He made a sacred alliance with them, they anointed him, and he became king of Israel.
Reflect
What did the northern tribes say to David (verses 1, 2)? How did David respond? After capturing the Jebusites’ fortress, what did David do (verse 9)? According to verse 11, David received help and supplies from another king. Has your community of faith ever joined with neighboring faith communities to offer help and assistance to those in need?
Pray
Lord God Almighty, in you we find our strength. Like a fortress of protection, you surround us in your love. Draw me close to you so that I may abide in the safety of your care. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Acts 1:1-26: Jesus is taken up to heaven.
