Better View, Part II

DAY 1 OF 4

If U Only Knew

Have you heard of imposter syndrome? It’s a form of self-doubt that persists no matter how much evidence there is of your success. No matter how many friends you have or how well you’re doing at work or school, imposter syndrome keeps you feeling like you don’t have what it takes to keep it up. Know what that feels like? Do you have difficulty celebrating things that you do well? Do you have a hard time receiving compliments? Maybe they rub against the negative beliefs you have about yourself. Why does that happen?

That voice in our heads that says “if only they knew who you really are” is not from God. Our spiritual enemy seeks to keep us obsessed with our own inadequacy. That way, he distracts us from thinking about and helping others.

The lyrics of “If U Only Knew” reflect the voice of imposter syndrome. They talk about the masks we can wear over our insecurity. Throughout the song, struggle and doubt plead for proof of God’s love. It’s not until later in the song that a realization is made.

I don’t like what’s inside, but I can’t change it
I don’t need a better me, I need a new creation
I know the agent of change who truly sustains it
I display I’m okay, but You know that I’m breaking
What if my worth isn’t a wage I earn
What if my worth is a reflection of Your image made
What if my value doesn’t fade and turn
What if the value has been set by the price You paid

Scripture is clear.

  • You are made in the image of God.
  • God knows you and loves you more deeply than you could imagine.
  • To God, you’re worth dying for.
  • In Christ, you are a new creation.

Pray: Holy Spirit, please speak to me through your Word in these next few moments. Help me to understand my worth from Your perspective instead of my own. And as you help my unbelief, open my eyes to see how I can be a light for others who are facing the same doubts.
