Surviving Broken Promises
Many people tend to believe those they love or trust for every word, without question, believing all people have good intentions and no one intentionally wakes up every morning to manipulate, deceive or disappoint another person. It’s okay to have a good heart and want to see the good in others. However, there comes a time when discernment is a priority to make sure a person’s actions inflict no harm upon you.
The Bible teaches us that as we walk amongst the world, there are many people masked with deceit, but we, as children of God, should recognize a person filled with the Spirit versus a person whose only teaching comes solely from the world.
Can you think of a time when you trusted someone to keep their promise, only to realize they did not truly mean it? Maybe there was a motive behind their actions? Now think of how many times it left you feeling disappointed as if they robbed you of your belief that they would follow through on their promise. Next comes the many emotions that birth: frustration, disappointment, defeat, anger, etc. No one is perfect, and the Bible teaches us to love and pray for our enemies and those who deceive us. I know, it’s easier said than done. We cannot control the actions of those who disappoint us. However, we can use this opportunity to be self-accountable and recognize when we should change our ways, renew our mindset for the better, and live to be more like Christ.
Do not allow broken promises to define you, destroy you, or anger you, but instead, let them challenge you to OVERCOME them! We grow through life experiences. God promises us a beautiful victory over our circumstances and the enemy! No matter what we endure in this life, He has overcome the world, which is confirmation you can survive those temporary feelings that follow a broken promise!
I have an assignment for you! Make a list of all you hold a grudge for because of their actions or broken promises. Then, wholeheartedly, FORGIVE THEM! Not for them, but for YOU! Pray for God to change your heart from the inside out and then celebrate being free from those emotions that hold you back from operating at your best.
Congratulations, my friend. It’s Day 2, and you’re still surviving!
