The Wisdom of Remembering & the Wisdom to ForgetSýnishorn
The Holy Spirit will bring Jesus’s words to our remembrance
Jesus had foretold his own death and resurrection, but his followers forgot about it. The Bible mentions several more examples where Jesus told his disciples important things, but they did not grasp them. For example, when He said that the temple would be destroyed and that He would rebuild it in three days, they did not grasp this. Only when Jesus was raised from the dead (after three days!), “his disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:22)
Jesus knew his disciples’ weaknesses. And He promised to send the Holy Spirit who would “teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). When Jesus was still with them on earth, they simply could not understand the significance of all the prophecies about Him. They needed more time and more wisdom to grasp the full meaning of his words and of all they had seen. The Holy Spirit was not just promised to Jesus’s first followers but to all believers of all ages. He will also teach and guide you, if you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior. He will bring biblical truths to mind when you need them.
About this Plan
“Teach me the wisdom of remembering, And give me the wisdom to forget.” These are the lyrics of a song by Mark Edwards and Stuart Townend. This reading plan studies several Bible verses about this topic. Do read with us to see what God wants you to remember and what He wants you to forget—and also what the Lord Himself does or does not remember.
