In My Head: A 5-Day Devotional by Grace GraberSýnishorn
Day One: In My Head - Introduction
I love Jeremiah 29:11 for multiple reasons. First, I love it because it was given to Israel before they went into a dark time; it was a promise from God that His goodness would come through in the end. Second, I love it because these words resonated with me when I was in a dark place.
Having grown up as a pastor’s kid in Northern California, I was often made fun of because of my faith. This, however, pinnacled during 7th grade resulting in me being followed home from school and being both verbally and physically attacked. These attacks were then followed up with cyberbullying on social media platforms, which led my parents to homeschool me for a year.
It was during this dark period in my life that I became suicidal, and was later diagnosed with major depression and PTSD. I felt a crippling fear, always looking over my shoulder, wondering when another attack would come. To find an escape from the fear, I decided that life was too difficult to continue and that it was time to end it all.
At this moment God called to mind the song “Take Me” by Hawk Nelson, and highlighted the following words:
“Take me under your wing tonight. Make me so perfect in your eyes. Hold on, it’ll be alright. You’re not alone… And you promised to love me, you’ll love me always.”
Instead of ending my own life, God showed up with words when I needed to express what was going on “in my head.” I cried out for help, and I found hope. I then began to pursue music so that I could share this hope with others.
Have you ever been in a dark place? God can show up for you. Hope is finding light in a dark place.
