Love God Greatly: Everlasting Covenant

DAY 4 OF 28

Everything in the Old Testament pointed forward to when Jesus would arrive on the scene and save His people from their sin. Ever since sin entered the world, the world was in a kind of advent, waiting for the promised one. From the beginning, God meticulously set into motion events and people that would culminate in the coming of the Messiah.

God told Abram that he would be the father of a large nation. This nation needed land and so God made another promise to Abram. He promised He would give Abram and his offspring a land of their own. To show how serious He was, God had Abram cut some sacrificial animals into pieces and lay them out. God walked between those pieces as a sign of a binding covenant with Abram, as if to say, “If I don’t keep my promise, let what happened to those animals happen to me.”

We know God cannot break a promise. His Word is like iron that cannot be broken. This should bring us so much comfort in a world filled with broken promises. No matter what, God’s Word is always true.

Lord, help us to find comfort and peace in your steadfast Word. You only speak the truth, You do what You say, and You fulfill every promise You make. Your love for us is beyond our understanding.
