What does the Bible say about self-control?
- The Holy Spirit helps followers of Jesus to grow in good character traits, including self-control.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23)
- God calls us to use self-control in our lives.
...for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)
- We can find ourselves in difficult circumstances if we don’t use self-control.
A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. (Proverbs 25:28)
- Self-control helps us to live the way God wants us to live.
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. (Galatians 5:13)
