Exposing Seven Lies of Lust Sýnishorn
Day Five: Lie #5 – A Little
Many of you have heard the saying, “Sin will cost you more than you want to spend, keep you longer than you want to stay, take you farther than you want to go . . . ” That saying is definitely true about lust. This conversation is much like this comment you may well have heard: “You can’t be a little bit pregnant.”
One of the favorite lies lust uses is that you can have a little—a little look at a woman, a little pornography, a little fantasy—and it’s okay. Just a little is a very common lie of lust. But as we have discussed, lust is a seed (James 1:15). “Just a little” is the seed of that weed, and that weed grows.
This seed has a known DNA. It begins as lust (small consequences in your life), then sin (large consequences in your life), then death (really big consequences in your life). Lust needs just a little ground in your soul to grow. Once you plant lust, it takes root. Lust then begins to grow into a large weed, having bigger and bigger impact on your life.
A little lust turns into much bigger issues as it progresses. Your choice to lust—to think differently than God—begins with a little flirting, but turns into having to make the decision to commit adultery again and again. Your lust can take you to unfathomable places and give you unfathomable questions you have to answer. I have seen men lose their reputations, jobs, marriages, relationships with their children, and complete control of their lives because lust convinced them to compromise “a little” over and over again.
As a specialist in the field of pornography issues and sexual addiction, I have seen men struggle in this aftermath—pornography and lust can lead you down a path to where you are dealing with difficult consequences, including STDs, blackmail, and even jail time. A little is where a big lie starts. Protect yourself from a little and you can walk lust-free.
Work it Out
1. What are some things that lust has told you that just a little bit would be okay?
2. What are consequences you know other men experienced after walking down the road of lust a little bit?
3. What are the “little” lust behaviors you need to stop in your life today?
