Hagar
Journey to the Well
In Genesis 21, Abraham sent Hagar and their son Ishmael away from his household. As mom and son wandered aimlessly around the desert, their water ran dry. In that moment, Hagar was faced with crippling fear for their survival, and yet, God was about to show up big in her life.
The angel of the Lord appeared before Hagar and gave her comfort by saying, “do not be afraid.” Then as she opened her eyes, she saw a well of water appear before her (Genesis 21:17-19).
When Hagar was broken, in despair and felt she had nothing left to give, God hand-delivered a life-giving response and placed a well full of water at her feet. In that moment, Hagar was able to refill her skin and give her son a drink.
Think about the significance of that in relation to our own lives as mothers. We can only pour into our children when our own cups are filled. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are best able to comfort, guide and discipline with God-minded love. The closer I am to God, the more I thrive and the better I parent. Open your eyes, Mamas, to see the well that God so lovingly placed before us to stop, take a drink, and be filled with Him.
About this Plan
In Her Children Arise, explore the Bible through the lens of a mother as we delve into the stories of moms in scripture such as Jochebed, Hagar, Rahab, Bathsheba and more! Whether we are in the desert or on the bank of the Nile, a queen or foreigner in a new land, God meets us mothers exactly where we are and equips us to raise His most precious gifts.
