Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of FaithSýnishorn
May 5
Introduction
Today we begin reading excerpts from the book of Judges, a book that contains stories from the lawless period in Israel’s history between the invasion of Canaan and the establishment of the monarchy. These stories are about the exploits of national heroes called “judges,” most of whom were military leaders. Israel’s survival depended on loyalty to God; but even when the nation was disloyal to God and disaster came, God was always ready to save the people when they repented and turned to him again. Today’s reading recounts Israel’s attempts to drive out the Canaanites with mixed success.
Today’s Scripture: Judges 1:3a
The people of Judah said to the people of Simeon, “Go with us into the territory assigned to us, and we will fight the Canaanites together.”
Today’s Reading
Judges 1:1-36
Reflect
Which tribe was chosen first to attack the Canaanites? With what tribe did they form an alliance? Were they successful? What tribes were not successful in driving out the Canaanites?
What were the Canaanites forced to do? What were your thoughts as you read this opening chapter to the book of Judges?
Pray
Lord God, lead us in the way of reconciliation and help me to be an instrument of peace and healing. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Nations embroiled in chaos and unrest
