Nothing Else: Only Jesus

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3 – Without Agenda

As a father, I love my children. I’ll spend the rest of my life giving them everything I possibly can and showering them with gifts. Yet the relationship would become toxic if every time my children came to me, all they did was ask for something.

Nothing blesses my heart more than when they want to crawl up in my lap and just sit with me with no agenda.

Now, let’s apply this to our relationship with God. I’m not trying to say He doesn’t want to bless you or that you are not worthy of His blessings because it is His heart to bless.

My responsibility as a son is to keep my heart postured more on His heart than His hand.

If my posture is just focused on the blessings, I’ve got it all wrong. I won’t be spending time with God because of who He is but only what He can do for me. And, if that’s the case, I’ll never be able to fully enjoy the blessings and gifts He has for me because they’ll never be enough.

Yet if my posture is set on Jesus, if I come before Him to spend time with Him because I love Him, without an agenda, then His blessings become like icing on the cake – a byproduct and fruit of the relationship.

A real, intimate relationship is built on love, a love that communicates to the other person, “I value you above anything else.” And I think it’s important for us to tell God that.

I want to live my life as a gift to God that says, “I’m not here only to ask for something. Your presence is valuable to me. It’s worth more than any goal or ambition I have.” And that’s exactly His heart for me.

But before I close today, let me be clear: God wants to hear your needs and longs to fulfill them. Again, it’s simply a matter of the heart. Take a look at how Paul describes it in Philippians 4:6-7 (TPT)…

Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will make the answers known to you through Jesus Christ.

I love that phrase, “offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude.” Because while it’s God’s heart to bless us, it’s also our gratitude and worship that blesses Him!

That’s the exchange, and I hope you rest in the blessing that is the presence of God today. He loves you and wants to spend time with you.
