Matt Redman - Your Grace Finds MeSampel
This Beating Heart
“Something inside of me
Knows there is surely more than this –
Echoes of eternity all around us.”
So much of the created world speaks of something beyond what our physical eyes can see. If we will look deeper, the natural will point us towards the supernatural. Have you ever heard a piece of music that moved you so deeply and you realized that somehow the sum is greater than all the parts? In other words, the effect that music had on you could not just be the impact of a certain pattern of notes, resonances and rhythms – there’s something more to it. It is creation announcing the Creator.
I remember the first time I ever heard a full classical orchestra live in a concert hall - and accompanied by the immensely gifted Chinese pianist, Lang Lang - I was mesmerized. The inspired harmonics, the melodic beauty – surely this could not be explained simply by musical science, or a series of random sonic events? I had the same feeling after watching the movie ‘Les Miserables.’ The raging themes of injustice and mercy, the amazing storyline, the genius of the songwriting, the epic orchestral score – it all led me to a place of stunned silence. As the end credits rolled, I thought the same thing again – this is far too deep, far too profound and spiritual to be covered by a secular explanation. It is speaking of something ‘otherly’ - something beyond. In that concert hall and in the movie theater I was hearing echoes of eternity, and whispers of a greater destiny. I was being pointed to towards the God of all creation.
The same is true of our created bodies. When we truly pay attention, we are amazed into worship and they point us towards the One who formed us:
“We’re marked by Your fingerprints –
There’s evidence running through these veins
That we are a masterpiece, with a Maker.”
Every single breath is a reminder. The blood that pulses around our veins, and the beating that helps it do so – it all points in one direction – a loving, wise and profoundly powerful Creator. The Message sums it up like this:
“By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power… and the mystery of His divine being.” (Romans 1:20)
