Dinner With Jesus

The gospel of Luke records a parable Jesus told about a man who was throwing a party and inviting all kinds of people to come. He started by inviting the well-off and high-class people, and when many said they were too busy and there was still room, he told the servant to invite anyone off the street. Why? Because he wanted everyone who wanted to be there, to be there! Jesus told this story as a way of saying the way we typically rank people, judge people, and label who is important doesn’t matter at all—not when it comes to the Kingdom of God.

If the Kingdom of God is like a party—whoever wants to be there, gets to be! It isn’t what we do and what kind of status we have that gets us in with God. It’s our desire to be with God that results in us being with God. God doesn’t live in this economy of status or rank, and we shouldn’t either. How would our lives look different if we lived with the same mindset as the man in the story? That there is still room for more—for anyone!
