Our High Priest and Lamb of God

Hebrews is one of the more difficult books of the Bible to comprehend. It speaks of Jesus as both a high priest and a sacrificial lamb. The role of the priest in the Old Testament society was to offer help to the people through the carrying out of the sacrifices for sin. Jesus came to fulfill this promise by being both lamb (the sacrifice) and priest (the mediator between God and man).

You might be able to identify with the audience of Hebrews. You might find yourself in dire situations and feel tempted to quit. It could be that you are raising the question: Why go on? You feel that things will never change.

But the author of the book of Hebrews serves notice on people who feel this way. He explains why you don’t have to give up or give in. And it all hinges on one name of Jesus. That name is our Great High Priest, the Lamb who sacrificed His life for you.

Additional study:

1. Read Hebrews 5:5-10. What does this passage teach us about suffering? Do you try to avoid or embrace personal suffering when it happens? What might be the result if you sought to learn lessons of obedience (as Jesus did in the role of our Great High Priest) in His suffering?

2. Read Romans 5:3-5. List some positive results that can arise from difficulties in our lives. In what ways might you hinder the process of achieving these positive results when you face trials or challenges?
