Lord, What Are My Gifts? | Knowing My SKILLS

But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” - 1 Corinthians 12:31

There was a time when a person in an ethnic minority, an African American for example, because of unjust laws and discrimination, had limited realistic career options. Becoming a teacher, a minister, a funeral director, or perhaps (mainly females) a nurse, represented the typical heights of possibility. These were artificial barriers forced upon the underprivileged. Today, by the providence of God, and the faith of a righteous people, young people from every color have so many choices. They have so many choices that it is possible we live in a world where young people are “choking” on choices. It is the era of multipotentiality. It is becoming increasingly difficult for people to gain clarity as to what they are called to do. But if you want to find someone who found their “gifts” and stuck to their assignment, let us take another look at our friend, John the Baptist.

John was a Prophet, a Teacher, and a Baptizer. He proclaimed God’s Word and helped the hearers to respond to God’s Word through repentance. He had an international impact, yet the Bible declares that people saw John do no miracles (John 10:41). There is no account of him opening blind eyes, raising the dead, or healing the sick. But his audience also reported that everything John said about Jesus being the Christ was true. John’s assignment was simple yet vital: prepare the nation for Jesus, and then present Jesus to the nation. John’s prophetic, teaching, and baptismal gifts were sufficient to fulfill that assignment. Yes, believer in Christ, Scripture states that you should “covet” spiritual gifts, but never become envious of another person. Whatever gift, i.e., “divine skill” God has placed in you is more than enough to fulfill your life assignment. Honor and refine those gifts – your abilities, your talents, and your strengths – and the God who bestowed them. He will be glorified through you!

Let us pray…

LORD, thank you for being The Giver.
I believe every gift you have given me is precious,
and those gifts are enough for me to fulfill my assignment.
Help me use them to reveal Christ to the world.
Amen.
